The Complete Guide to Reed Diffuser Refills

A good reed diffuser doesn't need to end when the bottle is empty.
Refilling a diffuser is a simple way to continue enjoying a favourite fragrance, change your home with the seasons and reuse a vessel you already love.
But refilling isn't simply a matter of pouring in more fragrance. Should you clean the bottle first? Do the reeds need replacing? Can you change fragrance? And what should you do if a refilled diffuser doesn't seem to perform as well as before?
Here is our guide to getting the best from your reed diffuser refill.
Can you refill a reed diffuser?
Yes - provided the diffuser vessel is suitable for reuse and you use a refill designed for reed diffusion.
At Andaluza Home, we've deliberately designed our reed diffuser bottles to be refilled. You'll notice that the fragrance name isn't printed on the front of the vessel. That's intentional: we want you to be able to enjoy Azure Breeze through summer, perhaps move to something warmer as autumn arrives, and continue using the same bottle throughout the year.
Refilling also means that the decorative part of your diffuser can remain part of your home while the fragrance itself evolves.
If you're simply topping up with the same fragrance, the process is straightforward. If you're changing fragrance, a little preparation is important.
How to refill a reed diffuser
If you're continuing with the same fragrance, make sure the diffuser vessel is clean and free from anything that could contaminate the refill.
When changing to a different fragrance, we recommend cleaning the vessel first rather than pouring one fragrance on top of another.
Wash the empty diffuser bottle by hand with warm soapy water, rinse it thoroughly and then leave it to air dry for at least 24 hours.
The bottle should be completely dry before you add the new fragrance.
Once dry, pour in your chosen reed diffuser refill and add the appropriate reeds.
It's a simple process, but allowing enough drying time makes a difference. Fragrance oils and water aren't designed to be mixed, so don't be tempted to refill a bottle that's still damp inside.
Can you put a different fragrance in the same diffuser?
Absolutely.
In fact, changing fragrance is one of the pleasures of having a refillable diffuser.
You might prefer something fresh and citrus-led during summer, move towards woods or amber as autumn arrives, and choose something warmer and spicier through winter.
What we don't recommend is mixing two different diffuser fragrances together.
Even fragrances that might smell beautiful alongside one another have been individually formulated to perform as intended.
Combining the remaining liquid from one fragrance with another can alter both the scent and the way the formulation performs.
Instead, finish or empty the previous fragrance, clean the vessel, allow it to air dry for at least 24 hours and begin again.
Should you replace the reeds when refilling a diffuser?
Not necessarily.
If you're refilling your diffuser with the same fragrance and the existing reeds are still performing well, there's no need to replace them automatically.
We do, however, recommend fresh reeds whenever you change fragrance.
There are two reasons for this:
First, fragrance oil remains within the reeds. Reusing them with a completely different fragrance can carry some of the previous scent into the new one.
Second, different fragrance oils can have different viscosities.
A thicker oil can leave residue within the microscopic pores of a reed. If you subsequently switch to a thinner fragrance, that residue may restrict how effectively the new oil can travel through the reed.
Fresh reeds give a new fragrance a fresh start.
How long do diffuser reeds last?
As a general guide, our POREX® compressed cotton reeds should last around three months, although there isn't a universal replacement date.
The environment makes a difference.
Airborne dust can gradually collect within and around the reeds, reducing their ability to draw fragrance effectively. Different fragrance formulations and their viscosities can also affect performance over time.
Rather than replacing perfectly good reeds according to the calendar, pay attention to how your diffuser is performing.
If the fragrance becomes noticeably weaker while plenty of liquid remains in the bottle, changing the reeds is often one of the first things worth trying.

Can you wash and reuse diffuser reeds?
No - we don't recommend washing diffuser reeds.
In particular, never rinse POREX® reeds with water in an attempt to clean them.
POREX® compressed cotton reeds have a microporous structure designed to absorb fragrance from the bottle and transport it upwards, where it can evaporate into the surrounding air.
Water can become trapped within those internal micropores and interfere with subsequent oil absorption, reducing the reed's ability to perform effectively.
If your reeds have stopped performing well, replace them rather than washing them.
The distinction is simple:
Wash and thoroughly dry the diffuser vessel. Replace the reeds when necessary.
Why we use POREX® reeds
The reeds are one of the most important - and often overlooked - parts of a reed diffuser.
Their job is to continuously draw fragrance from the bottle and release it into the surrounding room.
We use POREX® compressed cotton reeds rather than traditional rattan because they provide a more consistent and controlled release of fragrance.
Whichever reeds you use, remember that more isn't always better. The number of reeds influences both fragrance intensity and how quickly the liquid is used.
Start with fewer reeds if you'd prefer a gentler fragrance or your diffuser is sitting somewhere particularly warm, and add more if you'd like greater intensity.
Why does my diffuser smell weaker after refilling?
If a freshly refilled diffuser isn't performing as you expected, it doesn't necessarily mean there's anything wrong with the fragrance.
Start with the reeds.
If they've been in use for several months, have become clogged with airborne dust or previously carried a fragrance with a different viscosity, replacing them may restore performance.
Then consider where the diffuser is positioned.
Temperature and airflow have a surprisingly large effect on reed diffusers. A bottle positioned in a warm, sunny room or near moving air can behave very differently from the same diffuser in a cooler hallway.
And give fresh reeds a little time. The fragrance needs to travel through the reeds before it can begin diffusing effectively into the room.
Are reed diffuser refills worth it?
For us, refilling isn't simply about replacing what has run out.
A refillable diffuser gives you more freedom to treat fragrance as part of the changing rhythm of your home.
You can return to a fragrance you love, change it with the seasons or move a familiar diffuser vessel into another room and give it an entirely different character.
It also allows you to reuse the decorative bottle rather than replacing the complete diffuser every time the fragrance is finished.
