How Long Should a Reed Diffuser Last?

One of the questions we're asked most often is: “How long should my reed diffuser last?”
As a general guide, a good-quality reed diffuser should fragrance your home for several months, but there is no single answer that applies to every diffuser or every home.
Temperature, airflow, humidity, the time of year, the number of reeds you use and even the position of the diffuser can all affect how quickly the fragrance evaporates.
Rather than measuring its life too precisely, it is more useful to understand what influences how long a reed diffuser lasts - and how to enjoy yours for as long as possible.
Every room is different
A reed diffuser in a cool hallway may last considerably longer than one placed in a warm, sunny living room.
Open windows, air conditioning, radiators and underfloor heating can all encourage fragrance to evaporate more quickly.
That's not necessarily a fault with the diffuser.
It simply means it is working harder and releasing more fragrance into the room.
During warmer months, we recommend starting with fewer reeds and adding more only if you'd like a stronger fragrance. This allows you to find the right balance between fragrance intensity and how quickly the diffuser is used.
How many reeds should I use?
The more reeds you use, the stronger the fragrance will generally be - but the diffuser liquid will also be used more quickly.
If you're placing a diffuser in a smaller room, or during particularly warm weather, try starting with fewer reeds. You can always add another if you'd like more fragrance.
For a larger room or somewhere with more airflow, you may prefer to use more.
There is no perfect number for every home. Think of the reeds as a simple way of adjusting your diffuser to suit your space.
The reeds matter
The reeds are the engine of a diffuser.
They continuously draw fragrance from the bottle and release it into the room.
Our reed diffusers use POREX® compressed cotton reeds, rather than traditional rattan, because they provide a more consistent and controlled release of fragrance.
Turning the reeds every week or two can refresh the fragrance, although doing so more frequently will naturally use the liquid faster.
Sometimes less really is more.
Where should I put a reed diffuser?
Position can make a surprisingly big difference to both fragrance strength and longevity.
For the best performance, place your diffuser somewhere that gentle air movement can carry the fragrance through the room, but avoid direct sunlight, radiators and positioning it immediately beside, or underneath, an air-conditioning unit.
Entrance halls, bathrooms, bedside tables and occasional tables can all work beautifully.
The aim is gentle, continuous fragrance rather than overwhelming the space.
Why is my reed diffuser going down quickly?
If your diffuser seems to be disappearing faster than expected, consider its environment before assuming something is wrong.
Warm temperatures, direct sunlight, strong airflow and using a large number of reeds can all increase the rate at which the fragrance is released.
This is particularly noticeable during a hot summer, when the same diffuser may be used considerably faster than it would during cooler months.
Try moving it to a cooler position or removing a few reeds and see how the performance changes.
When should I replace the reeds?
If plenty of diffuser liquid remains but the fragrance has become noticeably weaker, the reeds may simply need replacing.
Over time, reeds can become less effective at drawing fragrance from the bottle. A fresh set can often restore the fragrance without needing to replace the diffuser itself.

Can I make my reed diffuser last longer?
Yes. A few simple changes can help:
- use fewer reeds if the fragrance is already strong enough;
- avoid direct sunlight and heat sources;
- don't turn the reeds more frequently than necessary;
- position the diffuser away from strong, continuous airflow;
- replace tired reeds rather than assuming the fragrance itself has stopped performing.
Ultimately, however, longevity and fragrance strength are two sides of the same equation. A diffuser releasing more fragrance into the room will naturally use its liquid more quickly.
